GT40 History

Commissioned by Henry Ford, the car was designed specifically to beat Ferrari at Le Mans, in part as a pay-back after Ferrari turned down Ford’s offer to buy the famous Italian marque in 1963. Indeed, the GT40 did beat Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966, then again in 1967, ’68 and ’69, dominating endurance sports car racing over the entire period.

Checkout the Shelby American Museum website. In this sacred sanctuary resides the original #1 and #2 GT40s as they were driven by Miles/Hulme and McLaren/Amon.

GT40 #2 Drivers: Dan Gurney/Jerry Grant

One of the most dramatic endurance races of the era was the 1966 Sebring 12 hours. The Second leg of the World Championship and the traditional final preparation for Le Mans, Ford had come here not just to win but to stomp the competition into the pavement. With no fewer than 11 factory supported cars, they were successful but not without drama, controversy, and tragedy.

Gurney and Grant qualified on the pole and planned to follow a strategy of getting out front quickly and running hard in order to break the Ferrari and Chaparral competition. Unfortunately, the engine failed to start and Gurney was stationary as the rest of the field streaked away.

Passing 17 cars on the first lap he made it to the front and stayed there most of the race and was leading on the last corner of the last lap when the engine failed. Although he pushed the car across the line he was disqualified for the act.

Sadly, one of the other Ford drivers, Bob Maclean, died when he crashed spectacularly and his car burst into flames. Later in the race, an encounter between Mario Andretti and Don Webster resulted in 4 spectators being killed. All in all a dramatic and deadly day.
